Berry Simpson is a registered Professional Petroleum Engineer, licensed since 1986. He has worked with a variety of oil and gas producers in Midland since 1982, including Apache, Williamson, EGL Resources, BP, Great Western, Beach Exploration, Chevron, Mobil, and Amerada Hess Corporation. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1979. He has also served as adjunct professor at Midland College, teaching oil and gas production classes.

Berry served on the Midland City Council from 1995 to 2007, including two terms as Mayor Pro Tem. He has also served with the Midland Sports Complex Corporation, Midland Firemen Retirement Fund, Arts Assembly of Midland, Downtown Midland Incorporated, Midland Parks and Recreation, and Daybreak Rotary. He is a published writer with numerous magazine articles and essays, and four books: Running with God, Retreating with God, Remodeled, and Trail Markers. Berry is a marathon runner, cyclist, backpacker, aggressive reader, teacher, trombone player, in love with Cyndi Simpson, married since July 1979, father to Byron and Katie, and grandfather to Madden and Landry. He and his wife minister with married couples, and he teaches an early morning men’s book study class called Iron Men, both at First Baptist Church Midland, where he also serves as a deacon.
