The Midland Development Corporation Approves an Agreement with Midland College for Expansion of their Midland College Dual Credit Career Program and the Technology Education Program

August 7, 2017 (Midland, Texas) – The Midland Development Corporation (MDC) approved an Economic Development Agreement with the Midland Community College District (Midland College) for the expansion of the Midland College Dual Credit Career Program and the Technology Education Program.

The fostering of the aforementioned programs will promote or develop new or expanded business enterprises in the City of Midland. The programs will assist in the retention of primary jobs through development or expansion of job training facilities for use by higher education.

“We are very pleased to partner with the Midland Development Corporation, MISD and the Abell-Hanger Foundation to expand opportunities for high school students to enroll in career and technical programs with Midland College, and graduate with workforce credentials needed by business and industry in the region. MDC’s support will enable us to offer state-of-the-art workforce education and training,” said Dr. Steve Thomas, President of Midland College.

The MDC will provide up to $1.35 million over a five-year period to be used for general expansion and maintenance of the programs which may include purchasing, refurbishing, remodeling, upgrading necessary equipment or facilities, technology, or software. Midland College may also use the funds for faculty and personnel costs associated with the expansion and maintenance of the programs.

Provisions of these funds require that Midland College meet annual enrollment numbers that will increase each year; starting with 445 total enrolled students in the first academic year, and 695 total enrolled students in year five. Repayment will be required if Midland College is unable to maintain the predetermined enrollment goals.   

MDC Board Vice Chairman Keith Stretcher said, “We are always pleased to be able to support our higher education facilities and this partnership will better enable Midland College to support our efforts in local job training and retention.”
