The desert skies above West Texas were filled with supersonic roars as Midland successfully hosted the highly anticipated 2026 International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC).
Last month, over 1,500 of the world’s brightest student engineers, researchers, and aerospace took flight in Midland’s expanding aerospace corridor all chasing high altitudes and the coveted Genesis Trophy. Sponsored by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association (ESRA), the week-long event challenged university teams from across the globe to design, build, and launch solid, liquid, and hybrid-propellant rockets to target altitudes of 10,000, 30,000, and 45,000 feet.
For Midland, a city historically anchored by oil and gas production, hosting the competition solidified its growing status as an emerging epicenter for commercial spaceflight and advanced technology innovation.

Midland’s Emerging Aerospace Industry on Display

This year's competition featured an exceptionally diverse international field, with more than 150 teams representing elite institutions from North America, Europe, South America, and Asia. The event kicked off at the Midland County Horseshoe Arena with an intensive, day-long poster session and safety inspection. Here, industry judges from aerospace giants, including Blue Origin, SpaceX, and Virgin Galactic, reviewed technical blueprints, analyzed payload configurations, and grilled student teams on their structural calculations and telemetry systems.
The payloads themselves showcased diversity in ingenuity. Rather than launching dead weight, teams integrated cutting-edge research experiments into their rocket hulls, including biological cell-survival chambers, atmospheric particulate sensors, and autonomous drone-delivery systems designed to deploy at apogee.
Following safety clearance, operations transitioned to the vast, open rangelands outside the city center, where massive launch rails dominated the horizon. The dry West Texas heat and clear, low-wind conditions provided an ideal launch window for high-altitude telemetry tracking.
Prizes were awarded to teams that demonstrated a successful apex launch, absolute structural survival, accurate real-time telemetry streaming, and textbook undamaged recovery sequence.
Midland’s Emerging Aerospace Industry on Display
Hosting over 1,500 international engineers and dozens of complex rocket launches requires highly specialized regulatory and physical infrastructure. Midland leveraged the specialized engineering capabilities, heavy manufacturing resources, and logistics pipelines of the Permian Basin to provide a seamless operational framework for the visiting teams. The city carefully and successfully coordinated high-altitude student rocketry flights alongside daily commercial airline traffic all week long, proving that Midland’s dual-use airspace management models are viable for permanent aerospace tenants.
Alongside IREC, the Midland Development Corporation (MDC) proudly partnered with the City of Midland, UTPB, and Space Force Association to host the Midland Space Economy Workshop, bringing together industry leaders from across the aerospace, defense, manufacturing, and education sectors. Simultaneously, the city celebrated the successful AST SpaceMobile orbital launch of Bluebirds 8, 9, and 10 from Cape Canaveral, satellites that were manufactured right here in Midland.
