More high school students will get the chance to develop their careers before going to college.
The Midland Development Corp. board on Monday approved a contract with the Midland Community College District to help expand Midland College’s dual-credit career and technology program, which in the past school year served 301 Midland Independent School District students. All involved hope to more than double that number in two years.
“It’s been a long process working with the MDC and MISD,” MC President Steve Thomas said ahead of the vote.
Thomas said the college will create a health sciences academy and a business/IT academy at the Advanced Technology Center. Plus, MDC funds will go toward training current faculty and hiring new faculty.
“I applaud the MDC for taking this important initiative to train a new generation of skilled technicians to help sustain and increase Midland’s workforce,” Thomas said in a press release issued after the meeting.
